Jo Fitzgerald Counselling

Men and women of all ages receive counselling for many different reasons. They may be feeling anxious, tense, confused. They may be feeling dissatisfied with the quality of their relationships or puzzled by their reactions to events or people. They may be struggling to cope with a recent life crisis such as an accident, bereavement or divorce, a stressful situation at work, or a health problem that could benefit from counselling. They may simply be feeling that something's not 'quite right'.

Making the decision to begin counselling can sometimes be a difficult one. Given the personal nature of the relationship, choosing your counsellor can also feel like a daunting task. So, how can you find a counsellor who is right for you? You may want to start by asking yourself a few questions like 'would I prefer a male or female counsellor?', and moving onto ' what sort of person would I feel safe and comfortable with?'. Most counsellors would be willing to discuss any concerns you may have about what they have to offer and their qualifications to practice.

There are other commonly asked questions that relate to the counselling process, for example, 'how can it help to talk to someone I don't know and who doesn't know me ?', 'how will I know what to talk about?' and ' what sort of issues can I bring to counselling?'. The following pages are designed to answer these questions and to illustrate how counselling could be beneficial to you, using just a few of the many issues clients bring to counselling.

About me

I am a fully qualified counsellor with an Advanced Diploma in Therapeutic Counselling offering individual short-term and long-term counselling. I have experience of working with a wide range of clients bringing diverse issues including those already described.

I aim to offer a warm, respectful and congruent relationship in the belief that feeling safe and understood are necessary conditions for working through your problems. I am committed to on-going professional development and frequently attend short courses to enhance my work. I am a member of BACP* and work within their Ethical Framework for Good Practice in Counselling and Psychotherapy. I am also an Intermediate member of CPC.*
